How does acupuncture work?
The most studied mechanism of stimulation of acupuncture points employs penetration of the skin by small metallic needles, which are manipulated manually or by electrical stimulation. Acupuncture can be used to treat conditions such as back, neck, facial, shoulder and muscle pain, sciatica, arthritis and headaches.
What actually does acupuncture do?
Acupuncture points are believed to stimulate the central nervous system. This, in turn, releases chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being.
How long does it take for acupuncture to work?
After two or three sessions, you should start to notice improvements in certain areas. Eventually, you will observe an overall sense of wellness, including your psychological and physical health.
What happens to your body after acupuncture?
Body parts where acupuncture needles get inserted can feel sore after needles are removed. Soreness from acupuncture typically dissipates within 24 hours. Although less common than soreness, bruising can occur at the needling site. These bruises usually don't hurt and last a few days after the treatment.
How do you know if acupuncture is working?
Acupuncture needles are much thinner than medical needles, and they are solid, not hollow. The needles may cause some muscle sensations, such as dull ache or tingling. Your practitioner will ask you to report when you feel a deep heaviness or numbness. Those sensations usually mean the treatment is working.
